The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, meeting with its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other top officials to finalise arrangements for the campaign.
Dickson, who disclosed the development in a post on his verified Facebook page on Friday, said the meeting was a continuation of consultations on issues affecting the party and the nation.
According to him, the meeting, which also had the National Chairman, Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe, and other party leaders in attendance, was the second high-level engagement within three days as the opposition party moves towards unveiling its 2027 Campaign Council.
The former Bayelsa State governor said the latest meeting was aimed at further deliberating on outstanding issues and reaching final decisions ahead of the constitution of the campaign structure.
“Today, I met with our Party’s Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and the Running Mate, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside the National Chairman and other party leaders, in continuation of our consultations and deliberations on issues concerning our Party and the nation,” Dickson said.
He added that the leaders had met two days earlier and reconvened to “further deliberate and finalise decisions,” particularly as preparations continued for the unveiling of the campaign council.
The renewed consultations come as the NDC steps up its preparations for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, with the party seeking to build a coordinated national campaign structure around the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.
The campaign council has attracted particular attention within the party in recent weeks, following reports of disagreements among supporters of the presidential candidate and his running mate over the composition of the proposed structure.
However, representatives of both camps have denied any rift, insisting that consultations were ongoing and that the priority remained the formation of a strong campaign team capable of delivering victory for the party.
The NDC leadership has also been working to consolidate the party ahead of the wider election campaign, with Obi and Kwankwaso bringing different political constituencies to the opposition platform.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, while Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has considerable political influence in northern Nigeria.
Against this backdrop, Dickson urged party stakeholders to put aside individual interests and close ranks ahead of the election.
“At this critical stage, I call on all stakeholders, aspirants and members of our great Party to unite, close ranks and work collectively for the success of our candidates at all levels, from top to bottom,” he said.
