Anger is a small madness that, if not checked, could be destructive. This, a middle-aged woman did not realize in good time until the havoc was done.
Filled with anger, Kafayat Lawal, while trying to reprimand her two eering daughters, went for a broken bottle and stabbed her 17-year-old daughter, Ayomide, in the chest, leading to her death.
The other one, 19-year-old Blessing was luckier as her own cut was minimal. It only affected her hand.
Kafayat, a single mother, who is currently in police custody, narrated how she did not exercise caution in handling her anger.
In her narrative to police detectives in Ogijo Division in Ogun State, she said the two teenage girls left home during the last Sallah day and got back home the following day. She was to beat them for that unbecoming behaviour but was prevailed upon by neighbours to spare them.
The following day, according to the 47-year-old woman, these girls still repeated the act; they left home and got back the next day, a misdemeanor she felt she could no longer condone.
In a fist of anger, she locked them up in the room, broke a bottle and applied it on them.
Unfortunately, the younger daughter was hit in the chest, a development that aroused the attention of neighbours who reported the ugly incident to the police.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a press release issued by its spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi saying that, Kafayat was arrested on July 27, 2021 for causing the death of one of her daughters.
According to the release, “The suspect was arrested following information received by the DPO Ogijo Divisional Headquarters, CSP Mohammed Suleman Baba at about 2;30 pm that the suspect locked her two daughters in a room, where she beat and injured them with broken bottle. Upon the information, the DPO mobilized his men and moved to the scene, where the two victims were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment before one of them gave up the ghost”.
Oyeyemi further stated that, “On interrogation, the suspect, who claimed to have separated from her husband nine years ago, informed the police that her two daughters left home during the Sallah and didn’t return till following day. This infuriated her and, when she wanted to beat them, people around pleaded on their behalf and she left them, only for them to go out again the following day and passed the night outside. It was the annoyance that made her to lock them inside and injured them both with broken bottle. The older one Blessing Adekoya, 19, was injured in the hand, while her younger sister, Ayomide, was stabbed in the chest and unfortunately gave up the ghost while receiving treatment”.
The state Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
