A 50-year-old man, Prince Akeem Olanipekun, was yesterday allegedly beaten to death with a charm.
It was learnt that the incident occurred at Imo, Arigidi in Akoko Northwest Local Government of Ondo State.
Sources said more suspected hoodlums accosted the deceased and asked him to pay a charge for erecting canopies for a social engagement.
It was gathered that an argument ensued between the deceased and the area boys.
The Nation learnt that during the argument, one of the hoodlums went home and returned with a charm, which he allegedly used to beat the deceased for refusing to “settle them.”
He was said to have died instantly.
Last night, there was tension in the community because of a possible reprisal by the bereaved family.
The deceased is survived by two wives and children.
Police officers from Okeagbe-Akoko, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Adetanrami Ibitayo, were said to have arrested suspects to forestall crisis.
The Police Area Commander for Ikare-Akoko, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Razak Rauf, confirmed the incident.
He promised to arrest the culprits now at large.
It was gathered that the one-storey building where the principal suspect was living had been deserted.
The traditional ruler of the community, Oba Yisa Olanipekun, the Zaki of Arigidi, could not be reached for comments.
The body has been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital mortuary, Ikare-Akoko, while investigations continue.
