The Traditional Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, has appealed to the Federal Government to upgrade the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta to a university.
Gbadebo, known as the Alake of the community, made the appeal when the Federal Government’s Visitation Panel to the College, visited him in his palace in Ake, Abeokuta on Wednesday.
He said the college had the necessary facilities that could qualify it for elevation to a university.
He said that not many universities had as many facilities as what already existed in the college.
According to him, the institution has a large expanse of land for immediate and future development, structures and conducive environment befitting of a university.
In a remark, the Chairman of the panel, Prof. Charles Ugwuanyi, said the panel was in the college to assess the relationship between the institution and its host community.
Ugwuanyi said the visit was to ascetain if Federal Government’s investments in the college, students’ welfare and academic growth, were intact.
He said the panel’s recommendation would help to add value to the institution.
Earlier, the Acting Provost of the institution, Dr Rafiu Soleye, said the college was enjoying cordial relationship with its host community.
Soleye said that the traditional ruler had deep interest in the growth and development of the institution.
He said that a befitting structure, which would soon be inaugurated in the college, had been named after the traditional ruler.
