Nigeria’s Bankole Adeoye has been elected as African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.
A statement on Tuesday signed by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye announcing the election, appreciated the efforts of members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in securing the position.
The statement read: “The Federal Government of Nigeria appreciates the role played by ECOWAS Member States in unanimously supporting the election of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as the next Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security in the African Union Commission.
“The Government of Nigeria is grateful to the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government for their invaluable overwhelming cooperation and support to the Nigerian candidate.
“At the same time, the Federal Government deeply appreciates all the 54 Heads of State and Government of African States. The overwhelming support, a resounding vote by the 55 Member States.”
It added that: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is grateful to the Special Envoys of Mr. President, who led from the frontlines in the campaign for the candidacy of Ambassador Adeoye, snd deeply appreciates their efforts.”

With experience spanning over three (3) decades in the field of foreign policy and diplomatic practice, Ambassador Adeoye acquired expertise and deep knowledge on bilateral and multilateral economic diplomacy and international cooperation, as well as institutional development.
During his diplomatic career, Ambassador Adeoye has held a number of strategic positions in Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry and its Diplomatic Missions abroad, including at the Western Europe Section in the European Affairs Department; Trade Facilitation & New Industrializing Countries of Southeast Asia in the Trade & Investment Division. From 2007 to 2015, Ambassador Adeoye served at various capacities at NEPAD Agency, South Africa, including as its Director of Corporate Services. In June 2015, Ambassador Adeoye was appointed as the Director in charge of the Second United Nations Division in the International Organizations Department of the Ministry. Ambassador Adeoye works to inspire change for a united, integrated and prosperous Africa achievable through inclusive growth and sustainable development and driven by the implementation of AU Agenda 2063 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
