The Association of Scraps and Wastepickers of Lagos (ASWOL) has called for an independent investigation into a video currently circulating on social media concerning issues within the waste and recycling sector.
The association, in a statement signed by its President, Friday Oku, said the issues raised in the video were not new and had existed in the sector for some time.
ASWOL urged authorities to establish the facts surrounding the matter rather than relying on social media narratives or unverified claims.
The association called for an investigation that would be independent, impartial and transparent, saying it should determine what happened, establish responsibility where wrongdoing is proven and correct any claims found to be inaccurate.
ASWOL also said it was willing to cooperate with any legitimate investigation and provide relevant information in its possession.
The association further called for the immediate release of individuals it said were arrested, paraded and detained by the authorities in connection with the matter.
It also demanded compensation and an apology for those affected, while urging authorities to ensure transparency, fairness and accountability in handling the issue.
