The Association of Scraps and Wastepickers of Lagos, Nigeria under the leadership of the president of the association, Comrade Friday Oku, and two other female members, Mrs. Theresa Bul (Assistant General Secretary and IAWP Communication Committee Member), and Alhaja Folashade Ogabi (Treasurer) will be representing the association for the first waste pickers elective congress in Buenos Aires Argentina.
The congress which is taking place in Buenos Aires Argentina will run from May 1st to 5th, 2024 and it is the first elective Congress.
The Congress is the Alliance’s highest decision-making body and is composed of 88 delegates elected from 50 affiliated waste picker organizations, with strategic partners invited as observers and guests.
The IAWP has 88 delegates attending its congress, from 34 countries including Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, North America.
This election will bring about a new dispensation and opportunities for the way of Waste Pickers, ASWOL, and NUSWON, to raise their voice in unity both at the local, national, and international levels, for a good bargain for the Wastepicker’s livelihood through Just Transition by formalizing the Informal Wastepickers into the Waste management value chain on Circular Economy Sustainability
