An aide to Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade is in police custody for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl.
The suspect, it was learnt, had allegedly defiled the teenager for the past three years, with the consent of her mother.
The mother is also in police custody.
Although it could not be confirmed last night, sources said the girl had allegedly been coerced to have three abortions since the defilement started, allegedly with the consent of her mother.
It was gathered that it was after the third abortion, which resulted in complications that damaged her womb that the matter became public.
Police spokesperson Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident.
She said: “Yes, the man is in detention. The case was reported yesterday and he has been arrested. The DPO is still trying to conclude. They have to send the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). It is a serious case. The man is in our custody. He is at the Airport Police Station right now. Very soon, he will be transferred to the SCID. The victim’s mother is also in custody. She and the man worked together. They are accomplices,” Ugbo said.
