The Nigerian Army on Thursday said the decade old Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast can only be crushed through active collaboration of religious leaders.
The Army as part of effort at enlightening the people of the dangers of Boko Haram, organised a day seminar for religious Leaders.
In a welcome address at the occasion organised by the North East, Sector 2 Operation Lafiya Dole, the Director Islamic Affairs Department of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Shehu Mustapha said the seminar is part of the army’s move to end insurgency both physically and spiritually.
He said the task of ending insurgency could only be achieved with the full support of Religious Clerics especially from the two major religions in the country (Islam and Christianity) through authentic enlightenment to the people.
He said: “Violent extremism is a serious threat that must be tamed from the grassroots hence the need for religious leaders, parents and traditional institutions to put hands together and fight the ideology among the younger ones.”
Religious leaders who spoke all agreed that no religion allowed killing of innocent souls or engaging in suicide mission.
