Breaking! Ex-Nigerian Leader, Shonekan is Dead

Chief Ernest Shonekan who headed the interim national government that succeeded the junta of General Ibrahim Babangida, has died.


In the age of 85, Shonekan died at Evercare hospital in the Lekki district of Lagos state.

Between August 26 through November 17, 1993, he served as the Nigerian government’s temporary leader.

After ex-military President Ibrahim Babangida stepped down on August 26, 1993, he was named interim president of the country.

Shonekan’s presidency lasted barely three months when late General Sani Abacha overthrew him in a coup.
The elder statesman hails from Abeokuta, Ogun state. He attended C.M.S grammar school and Igbobi College, Lagos, and obtained a law degree from the University of London.
