After 231 days of incarceration in Benin Republic, Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho regained his freedom on Monday.

Sunday Igboho was arrested on July 19, 2021 days after an unsuccessful pre-dawn attack on his Ibadan, Oyo state house by security operatives which left two of his aides dead while 12 others, including about four cats were arrested and detained at Abuja for months.

Many supporters of the 49 year-old self determination agitator have criticised Igboho’s continued incarceration and last week, the Benenoise government began to negotiate with him following reports of his deteriorating health.

The legal battle to either extradite or prosecute Igboho had witnessed several drama as the Nigerian government at a point ordering the Benenoise to send Igboho home to face his charges or arms running.

Igboho was facing trial for attempting to escape to Germany to join his family, enroute Benin Republic with a fake document.

The group’s Communications Secretary Maxwell Adeleye said Igboho was released to the President of the group Prof Banji Akintoye and the Deputy National president of the group and a French Language lecturer Prof Wale Adeniran.

Akintoye described the release as the triumph of truth over darkness, even as he commended all all those who worked behind the scene to get Igboho released from prison.

It was however clear whether Igboho will head back to Nigeria, or stay back at Benin Republic or proceed to Germany to join his family and nurse himself back to good health.

Igboho has been in the forefront of confronting the ceaseless attacks on Yoruba communities by rampaging Fulani herdsmen, an action which led to his determination to resist such attacks anywhere they reared its head in the Southwest.

His activities led the Southwest state governors to come up with Amotekun security Network to give an official bite to the need to provide security for their citizens who are slaughtered in their homes by the blood sucking herdsmen.
