Contrary to news in some newspapers, President Muhammadu Buhari has not rejected the Electoral Bill, Presidency sources has said.
The Sun Newspaper had today published a report that President Buhari might have rejected the Electoral Bill.
But in a news monitored on Arise News on Thursday, presidency said Mr President has not signed the proposed bill because he is awaiting advisory from some relevant agencies as well as the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
The National Assembly had transmitted an amendment of the Electoral Bill to Mr President last month following robust debate on the proposed bill. In particular, the National Assembly had introduced two elements – the electronic transmission of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the provision of direct election for political party primaries.
Mr President has up to December 19 to sign the bill or in the event that he refuses to assent the bill, revert same to the National Assembly for further amendment.
The National Assembly is expected to proceed on December 15, for Christmas break for the year 2021, a development which informed moves by lobbyists to ensure the President signs the bill before the National Assembly proceed on break.
