President Muhammadu Buhari will sign the amended electoral bill 2022 into law on Wednesday, Presidency sources has confirmed to Sunrise News
President Buhari would be signing amid pressures by political parties and the coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) who began a nationwide protest on Tuesday to protest the continued failure of the President to assent the bill.
They insisted that the bill has stayed with the president for 22 days and further delay could put the 2023 general elections into jeopardy.
The new amended electoral bill stipulates that the law must be signed 360 days before the coming 2023 general election.
The timetable released on January 14, 2021 had scheduled the presidential and National Assembly election to be held on February 22, 2023.
CSOs insisted that continued delay in the signing the bill into a law would jeopardise the electoral time table and put INEC’s preparation into abeyance.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s signature of the electoral bill on Wednesday will settle the raging doubts about the administration’s commitment to conducting a free, fair and credible election in Nigeria.
The Senior Special Adviser to the President Mr Femi Adesina on Monday that the President would sign the document in a matter of hours.
Speaking to the Channels Television, Adesina assured Nigerians of the readiness of the President to sign the electoral bill into law.
“I can assure you that President Buhari would sign the law in a matter of hours, it may be in the next 12 hours, 24 hours or 48 hours, but he will surely sign the bill.” Adesina said.
