The Nigerian Lions Charity Foundation (NLCF), of the Lions Clubs International Multiple District 404 Nigeria, yesterday donated N5 million to the Lagos State government to boost its fight against the deadly Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Presenting the donation to the State Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Finance, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance/Accountant General Dr Abiodun Muritala, the club’s Multi-Council Chairperson Abiodun Adediji said the club was moved by the giant strides of the state government led by the Incident Commander, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in containing the ravaging virus.

He said: “Lions are here to present a token to the government in the fight against COVID-19, and it is our way of telling the government that we would be there to partner with it in the onerous task of arresting the raging virus in the state.”

He said the Lions Club is aware that the government cannot battle with the virus alone, adding that apart from the cash donation, the club would in the next one week donate medical equipment and Personal Protective Equipment such as facemasks, hand gloves, soaps, and sanitisers all worth $30,000, to the government.

He stated that Lions Clubs have carried out viable projects among which were the Motherless Babies Homes at Lekki, a Diabetes Centre built by the Ilupeju Lions Club at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), a cancer treatment centre, also at LASUTH, and eye centre, at the Gbagada Hospital among others.

The Accountant General, in his response conveyed the appreciation of the state governor to the club for their magnanimity and to the cause of a safe, virus-free state.

He said the government has taken special note of the interventions of the club especially in the area of health and medi-care intervention, adding that the governor is proud of the strides of Lions Club.

Present at the event are the Board of Trustees of the club led by the Past International Director (PID) H.O.D Lawal, Dr Teslim Sanusi, District Governor Kafidiya, among others.
