Defence spokesman urges Nigerian media to promote peace

In continuation of his bid to garner media collaboration and support for Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) relentless efforts towards countering terrorism and other forms of insecurity in the country particularly during the general elections, the Defence Spokesman, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau today 22 February 2023 visited Voice of Nigeria (VON) in Abuja.

General Gusau who was received by the Director General of VON, Mr Osita Okechukwu used the occasion to urge Nigerian media to promote peace through reportage of information devoid of jeopardizing national interest and security. He called on the management of VON and other media organisations in the country not to relent in supporting the AFN through galvanizing the desired public goodwill and understanding of AFN constitutional roles.

The Spokesman described VON as a critical stakeholder in national security and building. He added that his visit was informed by the need to consolidate on the existing mutual relationship between VON and the military; and also convey the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor’s assurance of safety of Nigerians during the 2023 general elections.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the Nigerian Police being a lead agency during the election will receive supportive assistance from the military and other security agencies to ensure a conducive atmosphere for Nigerians to exercise their franchise.

Responding to General Gusau, the Director General of VON expressed his delight over AFN readiness to ensure safe conduct of upcoming elections. He pledged that VON will be used to promote ideals of national cohesion and unity among Nigerians. Highlight of the visit was an interview session in English and Hausa languages granted by the AFN spokesman. From VON, Genera Gusau proceeded to Armed Forces of Nigeria Radios Service where he was well received and conducted round to have first hand knowledge of equipment and facilities at the radio station.
