DFRLab to host Wendy Sherman on Freedom Online Coalition

The Digital Forensic Research Lab announced Tuesday that it will host an expert discussion featuring US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman during the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC)’s first official meeting with the US Government as Chair, in Washington, D.C., on Monday, March 27, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. EDT.

Broadcasting on the eve of the second Summit for Democracy, this event, “Live from the Freedom Online Coalition: How the FOC works for people around the world” will feature a high-level briefing from Deputy Secretary Sherman on the US government’s priorities as chair, and the strategic importance of the world’s democratic tech alliance. Sherman’s remarks will be followed by a conversation with civil society and industry leaders on the FOC’s role in catalyzing collective action on Internet freedom issues around the world including internet shutdowns, responsible AI, and surveillance technologies.

“Ensuring our digital world is a right-respecting one is among the most urgent democratic issues of our time,” said Rose Jackson, Director of the DFRLab’s Democracy + Tech Initiative. “We’re honored to host Deputy Secretary Sherman and this impressive group of global tech leaders as the democratic world works to forge progress at this critical moment in history.”

The event will be on-the-record and streamed across the Atlantic Council and the FOC’s digital presences. Those interested in tuning into the event virtually can register here. Only FOC government delegations, FOC Advisory Network members, and invited press may attend the event in-person. For further information, please contact Eric Baker at ebaker@atlanticcouncil.org.
