Dismissed officer, informant impersonate police to extort hotelier in Ogun

The suspects

By Our Correspondent

Two suspects, who impersonated as policemen, with the intent to extort a hotelier, have been arrested and now cooling their heels in police detention.

The men, identified as Tajudeen Bankole and Fawoyi Rotimi, the police said, went to a  hotel in the Ibogun area of Ogun State on June 23, 2021, introduced themselves as police officers and made a demand of an unspecified amount of money from the hotelier.

To worsen their case before the hotelier, the impostors allegedly threatened to bundle the man into their car, in the event of his unwillingness to ‘play ball’.

While still insisting on their demand, one Ibikunle Idowu made a distress call to Ibogun Divisional police Headquarters, reporting the conduct of the invaders, a move that made the DPO, CSP Samuel Oladele, to mobilise his men to the scene.

The fake officers were consequently picked up and taken to the police station, where they were interrogated and discovered to have impersonated.

Oyeyemi said: “On interrogation, one of them confessed being a dismissed policeman, while the other used to be an informant. They confessed further that they were passing through the area when they realised that their car was short of fuel and needed to refill.

They decided to extort the owner of the hotel, in order to get money to fuel the car”, Oyeyemi stated, adding that two forged police warrant cards were recovered from them.

The state Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation.
