Mr Fatai Oyewole, the General Manager, Osun Waste Management Agency (OWMA), has cautioned residents against burning wastes indiscriminately as it might lead to fire outbreak.
Oyewole gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Osogbo.
He said that people should not play with fire, especially during this dry harmattan season, adding that people should dispose waste properly since the state government had made waste disposal easy.
“The state government has made it compulsory for every household to register with an accredited waste collector at a price and the waste will be removed and taken to designated refuse dump sites on specific days.
“In places categorised as public places like public utilities, major streets, major markets and others, OWMA sends trucks to pick refuse daily.
“This is to ensure that the state is rid of refuse and kept clean,” he said
Oyewole said residents had no reason to burn waste or dispose it on their own.
According to him, OWMA continually carries out enlightenment programmes to educate people on proper refuse disposal in order to curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
He appealed to residents and households to patronise only accredited refuse operators (at a fee) to dispose their refuse.
Oyewole said that the harmattan season was a catalyst to fire outbreaks as such residents should under no circumstance engage in burning of refuse indiscriminately.
He also appealed to residents to always do the needful and be responsible for their waste disposal in the state.
