EPL: Liverpool can be Man City’s biggest rivals – Carragher

Carragher

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said the Reds can become Manchester City’s biggest rivals in the Premier League title race this season.

Carragher was speaking after Jurgen Klopp’s men came from behind to win 2-1 at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Liverpool conceded early thanks to Anthony Gordon’s goal and went down to 10 men after captain Virgil van Dijk saw red.

But they produced a stunning comeback after Darwin Nunez grabbed two late goals at St James Park.

The result means Liverpool remain unbeaten from their first three Premier League matches of the season after they drew at Chelsea on the opening day and recorded a 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “Liverpool have been Manchester City’s biggest rivals for the last four or five years, and Arsenal came to the fore last season. But why can’t Liverpool be that team again this season?

“The squad that Liverpool have right now isn’t good enough to challenge Manchester City, but they’ve got to go for it in the transfer market this week in terms of bringing in another defender and midfielder. That has to happen because Liverpool can still be the biggest rivals to Manchester City.”
