The
Federal Government has moved to boost the nutrition of pregnant and lactating
mothers, including children from age 0-5 years at internally displaced persons
camps (IDP) camps in Borno State.
The Federal Government through one of its agencies, Federal Commissioner of
National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons
(NCFRMI) on Saturday in Maiduguri distributed nutritional supplements to 700
households in an IDP camp, NYSC camp.
Speaking to journalists after the donation, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq, the Federal
Commissioner of NCFRMI, said the donation is to assist in boosting the immune
system of the women and children and curb the effect of malnutrition and other
diseases on the IDP camps in Borno State.
She said that the gesture was designed to combat malnutrition, support
lactating mothers as well as children between zero and five years.
She listed the items donated to include Peak milk, Golden Morn, Caprissone
fruit drink, eggs among others.
She also revealed that the Commission equally donated skills acquisition
materials to 601 IDPs in Bakkassi, Teachers village, NYSC and Dalori camps to
boost thier livelihood.
She said that 264 males and 337 females would be empowered on grains
processing, cream production, tailoring, tye and die, charcoal production,
cream and perfume production among others.
Others areas of training include catering and bakering, pallet and
horticulture, cap knitting, cosmetology.
She said: “Some of them will be trained on phone repairs, shoe making as well
as other agricultural skills.”
Farouq revealed that the aim of the training was in line with the determination
of the Present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, to bring succour
and empowernment to persons affected by the Boko Haram insugency.
“This programme was designed to provide durable solution to the welfare of
the IDPs and enabled them become self reliant,” she said.
In her remarks, Hajiya Yabawa Kolo, Chairperson of Borno State Emergency
Management Agency (SEMA), commended the commision for the support, noting that
it would go along way to alleviate the surffering of the IDPs.
Kolo said that the nutritional supplements would boost the nutrients and
strength of the women as well as fight malnutrition in the camps.
