Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ordering the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police.
Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu on Sunday announced the immediate disbandment of F-SARS.
Adamu made the announcement during a live address on Sunday, 11th October, 2020.
The Police boss announced that the controversial police unit has been dissolved with immediate effect across the 36 states in the federation, and the Federal Capital Territory.
All officers and men previously deployed and serving in the unit are to be redeployed with immediate effect to other units while new plans to combat thieves and other criminal elements by the Police Force will be announced in due time.
Reacting in a post on Twitter, Babajide Sanwo-Olu called on the federal government to reform the Nigeria Police.
He wrote: “A week ago, I spoke to the IGP and there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes.
“We thank the FG for listening to the voice of the people via peaceful but powerful protests showing the people’s commitment to protecting each other irrespective of gender or tribe.
“It is an undeniable fact that The Police Force needs strong and enduring reforms. A good example of a reformed unit is the Lagos RRS. “With constant funding from the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and the LASG, the RRS is the definition of friendly police.”
