The Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind (FNSB) has concluded plans to hold its White Cane Safety Day in commemoration of the Annual International White Cane Safety Day on the 15th of October at Muson Park,Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos.
The event will feature Walk from Muson, Onikan, Lagos to Falomo, and back to Muson, and a Free eye screening exercise for public transport drivers in Muson Park, TBS, Lagos.
Speaking at the press conference, the Chairman of the White Cane Safety Day, FNSB, Mrs. Ayopeju Njideaka said the advocacy and awareness efforts are in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10-Reduced inequalities. This SDG seeks to reduce inequalities caused by all forms of disabilities. FNSB is committed to empowering and promoting the social-economic and political inclusion of the visually impaired. Our rehabilitation programme ensures that they are once again useful to themselves and society.
Njideaka said annually, October 15, is set apart as an opportunity for the entire human race to reflect upon a phenomenal tool-the white cane which is significant not only in the life of every blind person and his/her respective family but also in the socio-economic well-being of every community, nation and the entire human race.
“This year, through this charity walk, we have engaged a broad range of communities schools, cycling enthusiasts, power pike enthusiasts, corporate organizations, religious bodies, and individuals. Our goal is to raise #10 million through the Charity Walk. This will go a long way in supporting our efforts and work towards breaking down barriers affecting the visually impaired”, she said.
