The House of Representatives has stated that operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will begin to bear firearms to curtail the excesses of road users.
The lawmakers stated this during the corps’ 2020 budget performance and 2021 budget defence on Thursday in Abuja.
Speaking during the defence, the Chairman, Akinfolarin Mayowa, stated that it was necessary for FRSC operatives to carry arms in other to ensure laws were obeyed and to allow the FRSC function effectively.
According to the Chairman, the 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to carry guns, NAN reports.
He said the committee would meet with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and also write to President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the Act.
Another member of the committee disclosed that the House would also meet with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu.
Also speaking, FRSC Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi, stressed that weapon bearing for protection would curtail violent road users and protect officers.
He stated that giving arms to FRSC operatives would also stop roadusers from threatening personnel on duty.
