How Does Technology Affect Our Relationships? – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Side Of Technology In Our Relationships

By Samuel Omolola Edema

Studies show that we pick up our phones more than 85 times a day and spend more than 80 hours online in a week. In the ancient world, before technology, relationships took time and people invested a lot to get their relationships to a certain level… but all of that have changed with the advent of technology.

With the advent of technology, a single click, one video, or a really interesting post can get you millions of ‘friends, comments and shares’. Some see this as a welcome development but others believe technology has destroyed the beauty of face to face communication.

Technology has affected all the different levels of relationships. It has affected relationships both negatively and positively.

Let’s see how this new couple manages technology in their relationship and home.

Abiola and Ahmed had been married for five years, and they loved each other deeply. They lived in Lagos, Nigeria, where they both worked hard to make a living. Abiola worked as a nurse at a local hospital, while Ahmed was a taxi driver.

One day, Ahmed came home from work with a surprise for Abiola. He had saved up enough money to buy her a new phone, something she had been wanting for a long time. Abiola was overjoyed, and they spent the evening exploring all the features of the new phone together.

As time went on, however, Abiola found herself spending more and more time on her phone. She would check social media and text messages constantly, even when Ahmed was trying to have a conversation with her. Ahmed began to feel like he was competing with the phone for Abiola’s attention, and he started to feel neglected.

One evening, Ahmed confronted Abiola about her phone use. He told her how it made him feel when she was always on her phone, and how he felt like he wasn’t important to her anymore. Abiola was taken aback at first, but then she realized how her phone use was affecting their relationship.

Technology has become an obvious part of our daily lives, and its impact on our relationships is undeniable. While it has certainly brought us closer together in some ways, it has also had negative effects on our communication and ability to form meaningful connections. In this article, we will explore the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of technology’s impact on our relationships.

The Good:
One of the most significant benefits of technology in relationships is that it can help us stay connected to loved ones who are far away. For example, social media platforms allow us to keep up with the lives of friends and family members, even if they live in different parts of the world. Video chat services like Skype and Zoom also allow us to have face-to-face conversations with loved ones, regardless of distance.

Technology can also make it easier to meet new people and form new relationships. Dating apps like Tinder and Bumble have made it easier for people to connect with potential partners, and social media platforms can also help us meet people who share our interests.

The Bad:
While technology can certainly help us stay connected to loved ones, it can also have negative effects on our communication skills. Many people now rely on text messaging and social media to communicate, which can make it more difficult to have deep, meaningful conversations. This can lead to misunderstandings and make it harder to form strong emotional connections with others.

Additionally, technology can also lead to feelings of jealousy and mistrust in relationships. Social media platforms can make it easy to see what our partners are doing and who they are talking to, which can lead to feelings of insecurity and anxiety.

The Ugly:
One of the most significant downsides of technology in relationships is the potential for online harassment and abuse. The anonymity of the internet can make it easier for people to engage in abusive behavior, and social media platforms can be used to bully and intimidate others.

Additionally, the constant use of technology can also lead to a lack of intimacy in relationships. Many people now spend more time interacting with their devices than they do with their partners, which can make it difficult to form strong emotional connections.

In conclusion, technology has had both positive and negative effects on our relationships. While it can help us stay connected to loved ones and make it easier to form new relationships, it can also have negative impacts on our communication skills, lead to feelings of jealousy and mistrust, and even contribute to online harassment and abuse. It’s important to be mindful of how we use technology in our relationships and make an effort to prioritize real-world connections over digital ones.
