The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has refuted claims circulating on social media that the Nyanya Divisional headquarters was set ablaze by protesters.
According to the police, only a container compartment used at a checkpoint in the area was affected.
The FCT Police Command clarified this in an official statement.
“Contrary to the news making rounds about Nyanya division being burnt down by violent protesters, the FCT police command wishes to state that it wasn’t the police division that was burnt. Rather, the police container compartment at Nyanya checkpoint was set ablaze.” He stated.
The statement Added that an attempt to vandalize the Tipper Garage Police Post was thwarted, leading to the arrest of four suspects: Mathias Jude, 29, of Nyanya Area D; Mohammad Ahmed, 23; Abba Jibril, 18; and Mohammad Haruna, 18.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth Igweh, acknowledged the residents’ right to protest but condemned any acts of violence or destruction of public infrastructure.
“Any violent protester arrested for destroying public property will face the full extent of the law,” Igweh stated.
