The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu will address press conference by 3 pm, on Saturday, the Chief Press Secretary Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi has said.
In a short statement issued earlier today, Oyekanmi said the electoral czar’s address is on the heels of the assent to the Electoral Bill 2022 into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said: “The Hon. Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, will today unveil the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election at a media briefing scheduled for 3pm.”
The National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Festus Oloye had on Friday informed that the INEC Chief will be addressing Nigerians after a meeting slated for Saturday to unveil dates for the series of activities that lies ahead for the coming general elections.
Okoye described the new electoral law as historic being the fourth time since the democratic dispensation that the law would be repealed and amended by the National Assembly.
He explained that the act has many progressive provisions that would facilitate the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in the country.
He said: “Nigeria now has Electoral act 2022, which repeals the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.
“Together with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the new act constitutes the principal law to govern the conduct of future elections, including the 2023 General Elections,” he said.
