The West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed claims in some quarters that its mathematics examination question paper was leaked.
This year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is billed to hold from August 17 through September 12, 2020.
But its commencement on Monday had been dominated by reports of leaked questions for mathematics, which is the first subject to be taken by candidates.
“WAEC maths paper scheduled for today has leaked since weekend according to sources. See the paper here. What kind of a country is this for God’s sake??? I hope the people responsible will be investigated and punished as appropriate,” a Twitter user had written.
But reacting to the development, the examination body said the rumoured leaked question paper is fake.
The exam body also called on candidates and the general public to disregard the information, nothing that the development has been a recurring activity of fraudsters.
“This is fake. Scammers do this every year. Only gullible candidates fall prey,” it wrote on Twitter.
This year’s WASSCE, earlier scheduled for April, was postponed indefinitely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The council, had in a statement by Demainus Ojijeogu, head of public affairs, WAEC Nigeria, assured candidates that it had put in place adequate measures to ensure their safety.
