The Labour Party of Nigeria on Wednesday issued a strong rebuke against the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, accusing him of being the chief architect of the party’s current instability.
In an official statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Party dismissed allegations made during a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Ajaero in collaboration with former minister Nenadi Usman and other allies.
During the meeting, the NLC had claimed that the federal government was working to undermine the Party due to its growing political influence.
However, Obiora countered, stating that it is not the government but rather the Ajaero-led NLC that has persistently interfered in the party’s internal affairs, sowing discord and violating the party’s constitution.
“If there is any person or organization that has destabilized the Labour Party, it is no other than Joe Ajaero and the NLC,” the statement read.
The party described as illegal a transition committee established by the NLC shortly after the 2023 general elections, arguing that the committee lacked constitutional backing and only served to embarrass the party.
Obiora also criticized the group for repeated visits to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling their actions a “nuisance” and a deliberate attempt to delegitimize party leadership.
The statement further accused Ajaero of exploiting senior labour figures such as Abdulwaheed Omar, Comrade Ejiofor, Lawson Osagie, and Professor Theophilus Ndubaku to push a political agenda, despite their retirement from active service.
According to Obiora, the NLC has failed to address the pressing issues facing Nigerian workers, including economic hardship and unfair labour practices saying, the NLC’s May Day address was uninspiring and disconnected from the real challenges workers face.
“The Ajaero-led NLC has failed in its core mandate to defend Nigerian workers. Instead, it is now a vehicle for personal political ambition,” Ifoh stated.
