Lagos CBD seeks cooperation of NURTW to curb traffic, environmental abuse

The Special Adviser to the Governor on CBD Mr Olugbenga Oyerinde, with some leaders of the NURTW in Lagos Island

SUNRISE NEWS, Lagos, Sept. 8, 2020 The Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts has called on the leadership of the State Council of the National Union of Road Transport workers to prevail on their members operating within the Island Business District in curbing traffic and environment issues within the District.

The Special Adviser, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde made the call today at a meeting with the leadership of the Lagos State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport workers led by the State Treasurer, Comrade Adekunle Mustapha Sego and branch chairmen of the union at the Lagos Island office of CBD.

Mr. Oyerinde who spoke extensively on various traffic offences perpetrated by members of the unions especially driving against the flow of traffic (one way), indiscriminate parking on the roads and conversion of roads to illegal garages as well as allocating selling points to street traders thereby obstructing the free flow of traffic appealed to the leadership of the State Council to use their leadership prowess to call their members at the branch levels to order.

The Special Adviser disclosed that the appeal becomes necessary because of the belief that transport unions in the State are partners in progress and critical stakeholders in the course of finding a lasting solutions to the traffic and environment issues within the CBD.

In his word, “We are aware that you are partners in progress and major stakeholders as we are finding a lasting solution to the traffic issues within the Lagos Island CBD and we recognize that you have control over your members at the local level and I appeal to you  to call them to order in ensuring that traffic situation within the district improves”.

While noting that large volume of population visit the Lagos Island business district daily for business or leisure said the cooperation of all stakeholders is important and all hands must be on the deck in finding lasting solution to the perennial traffic situations around the Lagos Island CBD.

Members of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at the meeting led by  Ayinde Akinsayan sego pledged the commitment of  members of the transport union to obey and comply with the traffic and environmental laws of the State.

While calling for joint patrol of CBD enforcement officers, security agents and union members to traffic flash point and junctions within the business district so as to proffer solutions that will be mutually binding on all, he pleaded for time to consult and pass the message to their members at the local unit operating within the Lagos Island business district.

The meeting had in attendance Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on CBD, Mr. Sola Giwa, members of the Lagos State Council of NURTW as well as representatives from the branch and local units within the Lagos Island Business District.
