The Lagos State Government through the management of Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has urged parents to teach their children how to take care of their environment.
The General Manager of Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola made this plea during the inauguration of Green Club by the Centre for 21st Century Issues, a civil society group, in Damiland Schools, Lagos on Friday.
The General Manager, who was represented by Mrs. Halimat Adeniji stated that every parent should strive to take care of their environment and also train their children to do the same.
“This planet earth we have to take care of it so that when we go away and we do not teach the children how to take care of it then there will be problems,” she said.
Mrs. Adeniji also revealed that the state government is partnering with the Centre for 21st Century Issues so as to sensitize the public on the need to inculcate tree planting habits and ensure they nurture those trees to maturity.
“We have to start planting trees, if we remove all the trees in the process of urbanisation, then there will be no plants or trees to replace our oxygen and when that happens, nobody will be alive on planet earth. So, try not to remove trees unless they are posing threats to lives and property, she stated.
She also noted that for the forthcoming Lagos State Tree Planting Day slated for July 14, 2022, the government is working towards it and hoping to plant 50,000 trees by the end of the year.
While delivering her keynote address, the Director of the Centre for 21st Century issues, Ms. Titi Akosa, revealed that Green Club was inaugurated in line with the group’s commitment to empowering youths and young adults.
Damiland High School students were educated on the best methods to manage plastic trash, how to generate money from garbage, and how to recycle plastic waste.
One of the students, Tanimore Ayomikun thanked the team for putting up the initiative of this club and was also grateful for bringing it to their school for them to be a beneficiary.
Members of LASPARK demonstrated the method of planting of Hibiscus Rosa-Synensis to the students.
