England manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Joe Gomez withdrawn from the squad due to a knee injury he suffered in training on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old defender will now miss the games with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.
There has been no confirmation on the severity of the injury or any timescale on a return but Southgate didn’t offer a positive outlook when questioned about the incident.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of the clash with Ireland, the England boss said: “I can’t tell you how serious as he is yet to have a scan.
“There was no-one around him when the injury happened. It’s not a good situation.
“We can’t speculate the exact nature of the injury, but we are hoping and praying it is not long-term.”
Liverpool confirmed in a statement: “The defender will undergo further diagnosis on the issue with Liverpool’s medical team.”
Liverpool are in the midst of a defensive crisis and are currently missing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho through injury, with Virgil van Dijk also expected to miss the rest of the 2020/21 campaign due to an ACL injury.
