Man, 31, docked for allegedly stealing motorcycle valued N400,000

A 31-year-old man, Isa Mohammed, was on Monday arraigned in a Badagry Magistrates’ court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a red Bajaj motorcycle valued N400,000.

Mohamed, without a known address, is standing trial on a count charge of stealing.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Asp. Clement Okuoimose told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 3, at about 2.00 a.m. at Abanise Mosque, opposite Grammar School, Badagry, Lagos.

Okuoimose said the defendant allegedly stole one red Bajaj motorcycle with Registration number KSF 175QL belonging to one Mudasiru Ahmed.

“The defendant was caught when planning to sell the stolen motorcycle.

“The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” he said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Fadahunsi Adefioye, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Chief Magistrate adjourned the case until May 10 for mention. (NAN)

Lecturer files application for committal for contempt against her husband

A University of Ibadan lecturer, Dr Bilikis Babarinde has filed an application for an order of committal for contempt against her husband, Prof. Sikiru in a Grade A Customary in Ibadan.

The plaintiff, through her Counsel, Mr Olufemi Adegboroye, on Monday informed the court that the application was filed because the respondent failed to obey the court order directing him to be paying the children’s school fees.

Adegboroye said that court order was to be obeyed, but the respondent only paid the children’s school feels during the first term and failed to pay for the second term.

The Counsel to the respondent, Mr Yusuf Anikulapo, told the court that he was yet to be served with the application for committer, adding that he had earlier filed an application challenging the court’s jurisdiction.

Anikulapo said that the court ought to hear the application on jurisdiction before taking other applicant once it was raised.

He further said that it was not that his client was not willing to pay the children’s school fees, as his client paid the children’s school fees during the first term.

Anikulapo said that his client have been cooperating but the plaintiff was adamant and frustrating all avenue to resolve the matter and trying to poison the mind of the children against their father.

The President of the Court, R. Gbadamosi, said that the court would take both the application for jurisdiction and committer together to save time.

Gbadamosi adjourned the case till May 16 for hearing of application on jurisdiction and committer.

It would be recalled that the plaintiff had urged the court to dissolve her 20-year-old marriage over alleged maltreatment.

She said that the marriage which was contracted in March 2, 2002 and produced three children has broken down irretrievably.

The respondent had denied all the allegations. (NAN)

Man to spend 10 months in jail for selling fake plot of land

An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Monday sentenced a 38-year-old man, Danjuma Yaro, to 10 months imprisonment for selling a fake plot of land worth N1.5 million.

The convict, who resides in Pasali village, Kuje, FCT, was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The Judge, Sani Umar, in his ruling sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

Umar, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N10,000 fine for each offence or in default serve a jail term of five months on each offence which would run consecutively.

“The reason for this sentence is that the convict did not waste the time of the court in telling the truth, he has shown remorse to the act.

“His counsel has also sought for an option of fine, he is a first time offender and has certain responsibility as a father,” he held.

The judge, however, awarded N1.5 million as compensation as prayed by the Prosecution Counsel, Abdullahi Tanko, on behalf of the nominal complainant.

He said that the compensation was not in lieu of prison but a reasonable instalment payment.

He warned him to desist from committing crime.

Earlier, Tanko told the court that the complainant, Dele Ani of No 61 Kayarda extension layout, Kuje reported the matter at the Gwagwalada Area Command office on Jan. 28.

He said that the complainant reported that the convict and one Yahaya Idris,  who is standing trial before the same court, on Feb. 2, 2021 conspired and sold a plot of land to the complainant located behind LEA secretariat measuring 100 by 100 ft for N1.5 million.

Tanko said when the complainant later discovered that the land belonged to another person.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The Defence Counsel, Owobu Godday, in his plea for allocutus prayed the court to tamper justice with mercy, saying that the convict was a family man and the bread winner.

Godday prayed the court to grant his client an option of fine. (NAN)
