SUNRISE NEWS, Lagos, Aug. 27, 2020 The police on Thursday arraigned one Kingsley David at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly being a member of a prohibited cult group and stealing N3.6 million worth of cables.
The defendant, 37, residing at Yaba is being tried on a four-count charge of conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and stealing.
The Prosecutor, ASP. Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the defendant committed the offences at about 3.30 a.m. on Aug. 9 at Ilupeju in Shomolu, Lagos.
He alleged that the defendant, a member of the prohibited ‘Eiye’ Confraternity had conspired with his fellow cultists to steal cables, belonging to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC).
According to him, the defendant and his accomplices who are still at large, did steal some IKEDC cables valued N3.6million from where they were kept to be used for repairs in that area.
He said the offences contravened Sections 411, 42 (a) and 280 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
That both Sections 42 (a) and 287 stipulate three-year jail term each for offences relating to unlawful society and stealing, while Sections 411 carries two years sentence for conspiracy for any convicted offender.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Chief Magistrate Mrs Adebola Adedayo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adedayo said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until Sept. 15 for mention.
