Man faces trial for allegedly disturbing public peace

 A man, 28, Okosun Joseph, on Tuesday, appeared in an Oredo Magistrates’ Court, Benin for allegedly disturbing the peace of the public.

The defendant is being tried for conspiracy, malicious damage of property and disturbing the peace of the public.

The prosecutor, Insp David Akhigbe, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 3 on Muritala Mohammed Way, Benin.

Akhigbe alleged that Joseph had on the said day, conspired with other members of a group now at large and also led the group to riot.

He said that they unlawfully and maliciously damaged two Deawoo buses belonging to the Edo City Transport Service.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 516, 71, and  451 of the Criminal Code of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable to Edo.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Victoria Iyekpen, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

She added that the surety must be a blood relation of the defendant and adjourned the case until March 4 for  hearing.
