The Lagos lawmakers have officially impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa who represents Agege constituency 1 and replaced him with his Deputy Speaker Lasbat Meranda, who represents Apapa constituency 1.

Hon Fatai Mojeed who was formerly the House Chief Whip emerged new Deputy Speaker while the Clerk of the House Barr. Olalekan Onafeko was suspended and was replaced with Mr. Abubakar Taiwo Ottun as the Acting Clerk of the House.

At an emergency sitting on Monday with 32 members present, Obasa was removed on account of misappropriation, intimidation of colleagues, poor leadership and gross misconduct.


Hon Femi Saheed moved the motion for Obasa’s impeachment under matter of urgent public importance.

He stated that in line with provision of section 92(2) (C) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Obasa’s infraction includes gross misconduct, poor leadership which included perpetual lateness to legislative sections and meetings.

High Handedness, lack of regard for members; gross abuse of office and privileges; intimidation and oppression of members by inciting members against one another amongst others.

Obasa’s impeachment was sequel his alleged chastisement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his role in the local government administration saga as well as reports of his role in facilitating the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers.
