India Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has prescribed the use of Yoga to combat COVID-19, stating that the Indian exercise regime has the capacity of boosting human immunity against the pandemic.
The Prime Minister made the claim in his message to celebrate the 7th International Day of Yoga which has a theme: “Yoga for Wellness.”
In his speech at this year’s International Day of Yoga, the High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Mr. Abhay Thakur said India Prime Minister in his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and some select world leaders, on the occasion, said: “Yoga has many benefits for the body as well as the mind.”
The High Commissioner who quoted his Prime Minister, added that: “Despite all the efforts and precautions, COVID-19 may infect any person. However, a strong immune system can aid in the fight against it.
“Yoga can help build that immunity, for instance, through breathing exercises that strengthen the lungs.”
The Prime Minister, was also quoted to have said that: “At the same time, across the world, millions of people have been forced to stay indoors for months. This has taken toll on their mental health as well. Regular practice of Yoga can also help them recover.”
He said: “Yoga has an inherent power to connect. Yoga is good for community, immunity, and unity.”
The Prime Minister said: “The theme of International Day of Yoga celebrations this year reflects the concern for good health and well-being of people across the globe. It is an endeavour to ensure that we focus on fitness as well as wellness.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has expressed willingness to work at promoting yoga in the country.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Chief Sunday Dare gave the indication in his goodwill message at the 75th India Independence Anniversary and 7th International Day of Yoga in Abuja.
The Minister, who was represented by Director Special Duties in the ministry, Mr. Abumere Akhidenor said: “Owing to what humanity as a whole stands to gain from the practice of yoga, the ministry will continue to collaborate with the India High Commission to create enabling environment for yoga to gain more prominence in Nigeria.”
The Minister, while noting that yoga has today become part of live of many Nigerians, said: “Researches have since established that traditional and modern yoga systems that include breathing exercises and asanas or postures, chants, and meditation can reduce stress and improve immunity and long functions.
“Due to these immense benefits, the practice of yoga has become a world while phenomenon which has developed into posture-based physical fitness, stress-relief and relaxation technique. We cannot also over emphasize the meditation and spirituality components of yoga which have helped to shape our societies.”
