Nigerian artist Omah Lay experienced an unexpected encounter with an earthquake for the first time while being interviewed on the Zach Sang Show on Thursday.
The interview took an unusual turn just as they were discussing the Afrobeat genre and the influence of music legend Fela Kuti.
As the tremor hit the studio, host Zach Sang reacted with surprise, exclaiming, “Wow, earthquake, holy sh#t!”
Omah Lay, visibly startled, responded, “Wow, that’s weird. I have never seen an earthquake; I have never witnessed it. That is crazy.”
The host, still sensing the tremors, added, “That’s an earthquake. I could still feel it. That was a big one. Is everyone in the other room good?”
Despite the disruption, the interview continued, with Omah Lay sharing his experiences growing up in Nigeria and how his background has shaped his music and success in the global music scene.
He said, “It was beautiful growing up in Nigeria, where you have less,
“Now that I have more, I can use my experiences and resources in ways that people who have always had more might not. In my opinion, it makes you very strong and unique.”
The host then asked, “How proud are your parents?”
In response, Omah Lay expressed deep appreciation for his mother’s support, stressing how her love and support keep him going.
He said: “My mum is very proud, she knows I love her so much and she loves me so much too. Her love for me is my fuel and I just look back at her and see how far we’ve come, my energy doesn’t die.
“She’s very proud of me and she trusts me and my decisions. She trusts that I’m going to be a very awesome human being and that keeps me going, it’s very motivating.”
