A group of Christian politicians, under the aegis of the Advocates for Right Leadership Association, a.k.a Believers in Politics has described, as gross insensitivity, the decision of the Nigerian Senate, under the leadership of Senator Ahmed Lawan to purchase one sport utility vehicle (SUV) each for the 109 senators in the 9th assembly.
The Senate had budgeted N50million each for each car, totaling a whopping N5.5 billion.
The BIP National Public Relations Officer, ‘Peju Akinyemi Abraham, in a statement issued on Tuesday, at the close of its quarterly National Executive Council meeting held recently in Ogun State, said the move by the Senate leadership was not in tandem with the current economic realities.
The statement reads, in part: ‘Senate leadership decision to purchase 109 SUV for its 109 members is insensitive, self-serving and ungodly. For a government that has refused to commence the payment of N30, 000 monthly minimum wage to poor civil servants and Nigerians workers to embark on this frivolity is a reflection of the insensitivity of the people in government’.
“We do not only condemn the decision, we equally advise the Senator Ahmed Lawan-led Senate leadership to retrace its steps, repent and ask God for forgiveness, so they don’t incur God’s wrath’
‘We advise them to turn a new leaf and begin to work for the interest of the ordinary Nigerians whose interest they are elected to protect’ he concluded.
The Senate leadership drew the ire of Nigerians since the news of its plan to purcahse brand new SUV for its members came into public few days back.
Many Nigerians have condemned the move by the Senate leadership,
