No Nigerian player (Super Eagles) made it to the list of African Best Eleven Players in the CAF Footballer of the Year award, a reflection of the fading glory and quality of Nigerian football.
In the past Nigerian players had always made the Africa top 11 list with the likes of Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, George Finidi, Victor Ikpeba among other stars.
But Tuesday night at the CAF Africa footballers’ award night held in Egypt, no current player from the Super Eagles had a look in for the African best eleven players.
Those listed as FIFPro Africa’s Best 11 were: Andre Onana; Serge Aurier, Joel Matip, Kalidou Koulibaly, Achraf Hakimi; Idrissa Gana Gueye, Riyad Mahrez, Hakim Ziyech; Mohamed Salah, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, and Sadio Mane.
It was a list featuring players from Cameroon, Egypt, Algeria, Senegal, Gabon, Cote d’ Ivoire, and Morocco.
Nigeria generally had a poor showing at the award with the only individual honour of Best Female Footballer won by Asisat Oshoala.
