It was a powerful evening of reflection and celebration as women who had undergone the High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for fibroids shared their transformative experiences.
The event, dubbed “White Saturday,” marked three years since HIFU was introduced in Nigeria, celebrating over 500 successful treatments.
Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, CEO of the Fibroid Care Centre at Nordica, spoke about his decade-long research journey that led to the introduction of HIFU in Nigeria.
Recognizing the country’s urgent need for non-invasive alternatives to traditional fibroid surgeries, he partnered with the Chinese company behind the technology.
“Since its official launch in 2021, HIFU has provided women with a safe, effective option for treating fibroids and adenomyosis without the risks associated with surgery”, Ajayi said.
He further said that the good thing is that the patient goes home that very day. So, there is no time that we put the patient on the bed, because some of the complications that come from fibroid surgery is not because of even the surgery, it’s because of the time that the patient will be immobilized
Speaking on the different between HIFU and other surgeries, Ajayi said HIFU is a method where there is no chance of death and this is what this offer.
Also, the Clinical Manager of Nordica Fertility Centre, Ranti Ajayi said that it is ultrasound guided. The person is conscious even if there is a lot of heat, the patient will be able to tell the doctor how she feels.
On the duration of the procedure, one of the beneficiaries, Cynthia Obianuju said that one to two hours, she was on the machine, but they will ask you to recover probably for another 2 hours.
A member of the Support Association for Fibroid Awareness, Wemimo Adewunmi said “I do hope that many more women can take advantage of this technology when it does spread out. It’s here in Lagos and Abuja.
The Project Coordinator, Project 111 Access Bank, Adeola Rojayi said that we have partnered for three years on our project 111 which is our retail banking division CSR which sponsors women who suffer from fibroids, from removal to aftercare treatment.
