NRC temporarily suspends train services this weekend

By Demilade Adeniyi

In view of the forthcoming presidential general election in the country, the Nigerian Railway Corporation(NRC), has announced a temporary suspension of train services from Saturday, February 25.

Services will resume Monday 27, 2023 in what the Corporation said was a decision taken to enable Nigerians exercise their civic responsibilities.

The Federal Government has announced restriction in movements and this would invariably affect train operations across all it’s three standard Gauge networks

These train services include; Abuja – Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), Warri – Itakpe Train Service (WITS), Lagos – Ibadan Train Service (LITS), and Iddo Lagos-Ijoko interstate Mass Transit passengers’ train services.

However, the management assures the general public of the normal train services recommencement on Tuesday 28th February, 2023.

The NRC on Monday had announced that only cash transaction is allowed on its Warri-Itakpe and Lagos-Ibadan routes.

It appealed to all passengers to come with only Naira notes that are legal tender as other notes that had been declared illegal will no longer be collected by its tellers at the ticket counter.

The NRC said electronic ticketing is permissible on the Abuja Kaduna corridor and efforts are on to ensure that these are also deployed on the WITS and LITS corridors to ease the challenges of fare payments on the train networks in the country.
