The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi has arrested two men conveying 18,000 litres of suspected adulterated diesel from Enugu to Abakaliki.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Felix Gbolade said on Wednesday that the suspects were arrested on Aug.14, at about 8.am along Enugu–Abakaliki highway.
Gbolade said that the duo were arrested by the command’s anti-vandalism team and brought to its office for further investigation.
“Our officers accosted them to explain the source of the product but they could not.
“When the product was checked, it was found to be off-specification with abnormal scent and colour.
“Investigation into the matter is ongoing and the suspects would be prosecuted,” he said.
The commander warned vandals and other criminals to leave the state as the command will make life unbearable for them.
“The state governor should be commended for ensuring adequate security in the state, but we should not relax because the state is peaceful now.
“The public should cooperate with us to sustain such atmosphere because criminals are not spirits.
“We are exploring avenues of synergy with other security agencies to ensure adequate protection of lives and properties,” Gbolade said.
One of the suspects, however, told newsmen that he was a driver contracted to convey the product and was not aware that it was adulterated, as alleged. (NAN)
