The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on Thursday flagged off a professional development training programme for 401 of its members, coinciding with its 67th anniversary.
NSE President, Mrs Margaret Oguntala, said that the training captured both the young and older generations of engineers.
The hybrid opening ceremony, tagged “Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Training for the Senior and Young Engineers”, was convened in Lagos.
Oguntala said that the training demonstrated the society’s commitment to equipping local engineers with cutting-edge knowledge and skills to thrive in today’s digital age.
“Today is a special day for all of us, as it coincides with the 67th anniversary of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
“Since its establishment, our great society has remained steadfast in its mission to advance engineering excellence, promote capacity building, and contribute to national development,” she said.
According to her, the launch of the capacity-building programme is a core objective to keep NSE members abreast of new technologies to remain relevant.
“The two training cohorts, being launched today, are designed to equip participants with essential digital skills that will enhance their careers and contributions to national development,” she said.
She said that Cohort 1 focused on digital transformation in engineering practices while Cohort 2, specialised in data analytics, designed for the young engineers.
“The successful candidates for the young engineers are 209, and senior engineers are 252. The successful participants were selected on the first come basis during the registration,” she said.
She said that beneficiaries of the 2024 training scheme had successfully completed it, adding that the ongoing initiative aims to build capabilities of local engineers to global level.
The president, who is a fellow of NSE, stressed the need for continued investments in the growth and development of engineers.
She urged participants to take advantage of the training to enhance their knowledge and skills, needed to shape the future of engineering in Nigeria.
“Maximise this training for personal growth, career advancement, and national development,” she said.
She thanked partners and sponsors who made the programme possible.
Frank Ibi, a retired engineer who joined virtually, said he hoped to leverage on the training to begin a new business line.
Also, Mr Ibrahim Aliu, another engineer, who joined virtually from Bauchi State, explained his interest in AI tools in engineering.
Other physical participants, including sponsors of the event took turns to share insights on importance of human capability development in a digital era.
They explained how the training would enhance professional development, citing COVID-19 as a catalyst that accelerated the global acceptance of digital tools.
