As part of the efforts to curb further spread of COVID-19 pandemic, Ogun House of Assembly on Wednesday distributed 26 units of locally fabricated handwashing machines to all the constituencies in the state.
The Speaker, Kunle Oluomo, said at the distribution ceremony in Abeokuta, that the socioeconomic impact of the virus called for the distribution.
Oluomo said that the self-financed projects by the lawmakers in the ninth Assembly was part of their respective contributions to complement the efforts of the government and other stakeholders to promote safety practices.
He said it was also to ensure that handwashing becomes a way of life, with a view to curtailing the community transmission of the pandemic.
The speaker said that the gesture was a demonstration of the lawmakers’ responsibility and responsiveness to people over the hardship occasioned by the pandemic in order to promote hygienic practice.
“The ninth assembly will continue to do everything possible within the legislative ambit to ensure the safety of lives and property of people of our dear state,” he said.
Earlier, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju, Chairman, House Committee on Health, said that the gesture was aimed at ensuring the safety of people, adding that the socioeconomic development could only be achieved in an hygienic environment.
NAN reports that the beneficiaries of the four-in-one mechanised machine included public school administrators, market leaders and community healthcare centres.
Some who also spoke to newsmen commended the lawmakers in making sure covid-19 becomes a thing of the past.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Abigael Olayemi, a Principal Nursing Officer, Italapo Primary Healthcare, Ijebu, lauded the good gesture of the state lawmakers.
Olayemi said that the gesture was “a rare sacrifice and show of selfless service to humanity by the members of the ninth legislature in the state”.
