Old Naira notes remain legal tender – Presidency

Buhari and Emefiele

The Presidency laid to rest at least for a while, the raging confusion over the status of the old currency notes which the Central Bank of Nigeria has been trying to mop out of circulation.

Recall the apex bank earlier slated the deadline for January 30, 2023, it later shifted it to February 5, and had further extended it to February 10, before the Supreme Court on February 8, shifted it via a interlocutory injunction to February 15, following the suit filed by the Governor’s of Kogi, Kaduna, and Zamfara States.

The Supreme Court had earlier on Wednesday adjourned hearing on the matter while had been joined by governor’s of Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Niger and Kano.

Presidency had earlier on Wednesday announced that President Muhammadu Buhari would make pronouncements on the development after the Supreme Court’s hearing.

The declaration that the old money remain legal tender, sunrise reports, would put an end to the confusion over whether traders, and other classes of Nigerians should stop accepting the money.

Many Nigerians besieged their banks on Wednesday following speculations that the CBN may not extend the deadline for the old currency.
