Osinbajo, Gowon, Jonathan, others bade farewell to former leader Ernest Shonekan

The late Chief Ernest Shonekan

Two former Nigerian Leaders, Major-General Yakubu Gowon, (retd) and former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan joined the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at the Cathedral Church, Marina, Lagos to bade farewell to the Head of the Interim National Government Chief Ernest Adegunle Shonekan, who died on January 11, 2022.

Shonekan, who was the Head of Government for a period of six months in the heady period of 1993, after the annulment of the presidential election which was won by a fellow Egba, Ogun State politician and billionaire philanthropist Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola, had passed on after a brief illness.

It was a day of tributes for the former leader, a business tycoon and boardroom technocrat, who rose to become the Chairman/CEO of UAC Nigeria Plc. from where he was appointed to lead the ING government by former military President Muhammadu Buhari.

Chief Shonekan provided stability and calmness to weather the turbulent period in 1993, which he did to the best of his ability until the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Sani Abacha struck in November 26, 1993 and shoved him aside.

Chief Shonekan’s remains was interred at a private vault in Lagos.
