- Insists party has been commercialised
By Seyi Babalola
A former Nigerian Senator, Dino Melaye, on Saturday declared that Nigeria’s foremost opposition party – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is dead and has become part of the nation’s history.
Melaye, a chieftain of the party, in a tweet on X, decried the fragmentation plaguing the party, saying it has been destroyed by the acting chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagun and others.
He said he would talk about the commercialization and privatization of the PDP later.
Melaye wrote: “End of the road for PDP as Damagun, Bature and Anyanwu irredeemably destroyed the party. We will talk about the commercialisation and privatisation of PDP later. PDP is now once upon a time.”
Melaye’s position negates Mr Damagun position. During the inauguration of the reconciliation and disciplinary committees recently, he had restated his commitment to resolve all internal wranglings within the party and address all misconduct within the party.
While responding to allegations by some members of the party, including a former Federal Commissioner for Information and Ijaw National Leader, Edwin Clark, that he was destroying the party, Damagun said he was ready to pay the price of leadership and encouraged criticisms within and outside his party.
Melaye, an ally of the party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election and former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar however insisted Damagun is bent on destroying and burying the party.
