Photo News: Refuse takes over as Ambode abandons Lagos

Still smarting from his crushing humiliation at the governorship primaries, and failure to clinch the second term ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governor Akinwunmi Ambode seems to have practically abandoned governance leaving the state’s environment in its worst time ever.

SUNRISE NEWS checks around the city of Lagos reveals a growing filth with heaps of refuse mounting on street corners, roads and major highways posing serious challenge to the health of residents.

The governor who had mouthed an ineffectual attempt to take the state from being a megacity to a smart city seems to have been defeated by refuse which environmentalists said about seven million metric tons is being generated across the state per day.

They said if nothing is urgently done to evacuate the waste residents risk infectious diseases of epidemic proportion.

SUNRISE NEWS recalls that the government two years ago established a special purpose firm Visionscape Nigeria Limited to oversee all industrial and domestic waste and refuse evacuation in the state.

Visionscape had taken the assignment over from Private Sector Partners (PSP) Operators who had been effectively discharging the assignment since year 2000.

Frustrated by the failure of his new initiative to rise to the occasion and rescue the state from being overrun with waste Ambode had reversed his directive and inviting the operators back to business. The decision is however yet to have any salutary effect.
