The Police Command in Edo said it had arrested a 63-year-old grandfather for defiling a two-year-old girl.
The Spokesman for the Command, Mr Chidi Nwabuzor, said that the incident happened in Urhonigbe community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the state.
Nwabuzor said that the police had completed its investigation into the matter and the suspect would soon be prosecuted in court.
The suspect, whose name was given as Sunday Igbinokhuaihe, is a neighbour of the parents of the little girl.
Igbinokhuaihe was alleged to have lured the girl into his room using a loaf of bread and used his finger to break the hymen, while the girl’s mother was in the kitchen preparing dinner.
It was further gathered that the mother of the child noticed that something was amiss when her daughter screamed while she attempted to bathe her later in the evening.
The little girl was said to have described to her mother how Igbinokhuaihe used his finger on her private part, a situation that prompted the mother to raise the alarm that attracted neighbours.
The matter was reported at the Urhonigbe Police Station and the suspect was arrested and transferred to Abudu Police Division.
Meanwhile, the Edo Indigenous Movement, led by Mr Omogiade Edokpolor, has indicated interest in the matter.
Edokpolor called for thorough investigation and prosecution of the suspect. He led members of the group to the police headquarters on Thursday to ensure that the case was not swept under the carpet. (NAN)
