A minor pothole repair on the inbound carriage of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, after the long bridge before Ojodu-Berger, threw many motorists into hours of distress in traffic gridlock on Thursday.

Eye witnesses said traffic gridlock stretched from Berger to The Punch place by Isheri, on the expressway.

According to a motorist, the gridlock which started around 11am stretched into the late evening, with traffic almost at a standstill.

But the Federal Controller of Works Fred Kuti said the gridlock was as a result of minor repair works being carried out on the rpad.

“The contractor was trying to palliate a portion of the road inward Lagos, close to Ojodu Berger that was what caused the traffic,” Kuti, an engineer said in a telephone interview.

He said the repair had to be done especially because we are in the rainy season and the daily downpour, and the likelihood of the pothole getting worse.

He said he had the assurances of the contractor that the repair work would be completed before the evening rush hour.

“The contractor has assured that they would have finished the repairs before the close of work in order to avoid the congestion in the evening,” Kuti added.

The Nation reports that the traffic situation has improved and the gridlock has thawed before evening.
